Struggling With the Winter Blues? These Three Unconventional Approaches to Self-Care Can Help

As the seasons change, so can our mood. With shorter days and less sunlight, many of us experience the “winter blues”—a milder form of Seasonal Affective Disorder. As a result, we may feel sluggish, irritable, or just off. But what if this winter didn’t have to be that way? What if, instead of just getting through the season, you could change that story a bit? Here are a couple of examples that can help, from Hygge to Cuffing Season.   

Hygge

You have probably heard of HYGGE If you could sum up hygge in one image, it might be something like: a cozy blanket, a cup of hot beverage, and soft candlelight flickering in the background. Sounds cozy, doesn’t it? Pronounced “hoo-gah,” hygge is a Danish concept that’s all about coziness and finding joy in life’s simple moments. Some of its key ingredients include:

      • Togetherness
      • Relaxation
      • Comfort
      • Indulgence
      • Presence

In Denmark, where winters are long and dark, hygge isn’t just a trend; it’s a survival tool. It’s how they turn cold, gloomy days into an opportunity to slow down and connect—with themselves and with others. And the best part? You can embrace hygge in your own way, right at home. Here are some ideas for doing that: 

  • Create a cozy haven: Transform your space into a retreat for all your senses. Wrap yourself in a soft or weighted blanket and let calming scents and music ease your mind. Warm lighting is very helpful.  While candles add a beautiful glow, even simply switching to soft, warm-toned bulbs can make your home feel instantly more inviting.
  • Share simple joys: Hygge is as much about connection as it is about comfort. Invite friends over for a relaxed potluck, a cozy movie night, or a low-key coffee date. Just make sure not to overcommit. If family gatherings feel overwhelming, it’s okay to be selective and prioritize the ones that truly bring you joy.
  • Savor the moment: Hygge means embracing life’s little pleasures without rushing to the next thing. So, whether it’s sipping tea, reading a book, or just enjoying the sound of rain against your window, let yourself slow down and be fully present. The re-charge moments are essential on a daily basis and for long term sustainability.

Cuffing Season

Ever notice how, as the temperature drops, for some of us the desire to cozy up with someone grows? Cuffing season refers to that time of year when folks often feel a stronger pull toward relationships. It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Find someone to binge-watch Netflix with until spring!” But why does this happen? A few factors come into play: For starters, shorter days and colder nights can make us crave physical and emotional warmth.  Add in the pressures of holiday gatherings, and the desire to connect often grows. On top of that, winter slows life down. With fewer outdoor activities and distractions, it’s easier to notice loneliness and seek comfort shared with someone else. So, how do you navigate cuffing season without losing yourself?

  • Be intentional: Do you know what you’re looking for? A fun dating experience? Something more serious? Clarifying what you are looking for  helps you make choices that align with your needs rather than the season’s pressures.
  • Communicate openly: Temporary relationships can get complicated fast if expectations and intentions aren’t clear and shared. While there’s always room for things to evolve, being upfront about your intentions helps avoid misunderstandings. Plus, it weeds out the people who are not a good match at this time.
  • Stay active and social: It’s easy to get wrapped up in a new cuffing season romance. Nothing wrong with that.  Ideally it doesn’t become an all or nothing thing where we forget about friends, hobbies, or, well… ourselves.

Snowga and Outdoor Activities

Does the thought of exercising in winter make you want to hide under the covers? You’re not alone. Yet you already know that staying active or at least spending some time outdoors all year long—even in the cold—can do wonders for your mood. That’s where snowga comes in. Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: yoga in the snow!   It’s a way to combine mindfulness, movement, and nature. Plus, it gets you outside—something that many of us need a little more of in the winter.  Some yoga studios even offer seasonal snowga pop-up classes. But since it’s all about creativity and play, you don’t need a class to try it.  Just find a snowy spot, layer up, and start with simple, grounding poses like the Warrior or Goddess pose.   And if that’s not your thing, find other ways to get some sunlight - even on gray days.  It’s essential for our wellbeing.
